ROME, Ga. – Old Dominion overcame an early deficit to capture its third Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Crown at the Rome Tennis Center. The Monarchs have won three consecutive titles and remain undefeated against league opponents.
Sixth-seeded and No. 72 nationally ranked Marshall (20-6) jumped out to an early lead in the match with a win on the second doubles court as Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane won 6-2. Top-seeded and No. 46 nationally ranked Old Dominion responded on court one as Sofia Johnson and Victoria Matasova won 6-4. The doubles point was decided on court three as the pairing of Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout won the tie-break 7-5 for the early 1-0 lead in favor of the Thundering Herd.
Old Dominion answered the call in singles as the Monarchs did not lose a single first set. In control of their own destiny, Sun Belt Women’s Tennis Player to Watch Kira Matushkina won 6-2, 6-1 on court two to level the match.
Victoria Matasova won on court five shortly after 6-2, 6-0 as Ulyana Romanova won 6-2, 6-2 to put Old Dominion ahead 3-1. After winning her tie-break in the first set, Lidiia Rasskouskaia provided the heroics on court three with a 7-6, 6-2 win. The Monarchs lost just one set during the match en route to the 4-1 victory and tournament crown.
Old Dominion earns the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show is slated for Monday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
